Responsible gambling

Betting can cost you more than the stake

This page carries no links to bookmakers and never will. It is here to say what exists in Ghana when betting stops being something you enjoy, and to be honest about what does not.

Ghana has no national gambling helpline

There is no dedicated national line for gambling harm in this country, and this page prints no number rather than a wrong one. The regulator's own 2026 report on gaming and mental health found that most people surveyed were unaware of any support service at all, and it commits to publicising helplines, counselling services and referral pathways as future work. A regulator undertaking to publicise helplines is the strongest evidence available that none is published today.

Two numbers circulate on affiliate pages as Ghanaian gambling helplines. Both are the regulator's general enquiry and complaints lines, published as exactly that on its own contact page. Somebody in trouble at eleven at night who dials one expecting counselling reaches a licensing office, which is worse than reaching nothing, because it costs the call and the courage it took to make it.

Ghana's Mental Health Authority has published a general psychosocial line. We could not confirm that it was still operating in 2026, and it is not a gambling service in any case, so no number for it appears here either. A doctor, a pharmacist or a health worker at any clinic can point you to what is currently operating in your area, and that is a better route than a number copied off a betting website.

If you are thinking about harming yourself, this is a medical emergency rather than a gambling question. Go to the nearest hospital, or ask someone to take you.

What does exist, and it is at the bookmaker

The useful tools in this market sit inside the account rather than outside it. A deposit limit caps what can go in over a day, a week or a month. Self-exclusion shuts the account for a set period and is meant to be difficult to reverse. Some operators also offer a cooling-off period, a session reminder or a loss limit.

This site does not publish a table of which bookmaker offers which of those. Operators here do not document them consistently enough for the comparison to be honest, and a table with guesses in it would be worse than none. So the practical advice is to ask support directly, ask for it in writing, and keep the reply.

Two things are worth insisting on when you do. A limit takes effect immediately when it is reduced, and an increase should not. And a self-exclusion is not an account closure, so use the word.

When the operator is the problem

Gambling in Ghana is licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, and a licensed operator is answerable to it. Non-compliance is stated to affect licence renewal, which is the leverage behind a complaint.

  1. Put it to the operator first, in writing, through its published support address. Describe what happened, with dates, amounts and any reference number, and ask for a written reply.
  2. Keep everything. Screenshots of the slip, the cashier and the chat, the mobile money confirmation message, and the email you sent. A complaint made from memory is much harder to act on.
  3. If the operator does not resolve it, take it to the regulator through the contact route published on its own site. Ignoring a self-exclusion request, refusing a withdrawal without a stated reason and taking bets from someone under eighteen are all matters for it.

The regulator's own site is Gaming Commission of Ghana. Use it rather than a licence badge in a website footer, because the badge is published by the party it describes.

Signs worth taking seriously

None of these is a diagnosis. Several of them together, over a few weeks, is a pattern rather than a bad run.

  • Betting money that was meant for rent, school fees, food or a bill.
  • Chasing a loss with a larger stake, or a longer acca, to get back to level.
  • Borrowing to stake, including from a mobile money loan product or from someone who does not know what it is for.
  • Lying about how much has gone in, or about whether you bet at all today.
  • Betting to feel better rather than to enjoy a match, and feeling worse afterwards.
  • Watching sport you have no interest in because there is money on it.
  • Trying to stop and finding it lasts a day.

Things that block rather than ask

A promise made to yourself is the weakest tool available. These are ordered from the one that works soonest to the one people put off longest.

Set a deposit limit before the first deposit

A limit set while you are calm is a different instrument from one set after a bad night. Ask support to apply it to the account and ask for confirmation in writing.

Ask for self-exclusion, not a break

Closing an account is easy to undo. Self-exclusion is meant to be hard to undo, and it is the tool worth asking for by name. Ask what period is available and what it takes to lift it.

Keep betting money in a separate wallet

One wallet for bills and one for anything else. It removes the moment where a deposit and a transfer to a landlord come out of the same balance.

Turn off the marketing

Operators send offers by SMS and push notification. Unsubscribing is a right you can exercise at any time, and a quiet handset is worth more than any single decision.

Remove the app

An icon on a home screen is a prompt several times a day. Deleting it does not close the account and it is not a solution on its own, but it puts a step between an urge and a stake.

Tell one person

Somebody who knows the amount, not a rounded version of it. Gambling harm survives on being private, and this is the step people put off longest.

Eighteen, and the account is yours

The legal age is 18+ throughout Ghana. That covers betting shops, betting apps and every site licensed here.

An account belongs to the person who opened it. Letting someone under eighteen bet through your account or your mobile money wallet is not a technicality, and it is the fastest way to have a withdrawal refused when identity checks catch up with the account.

Asked about this

Is there a gambling helpline in Ghana?

No national one, and this page prints no number rather than a wrong one. The regulator itself has committed to publicising helplines, counselling services and referral pathways as future work, which is the clearest evidence available that none is published yet.

Why not publish the numbers other sites publish?

Because they are not what those sites say they are. The two most commonly reproduced are the Gaming Commission of Ghana’s general enquiry and complaints lines, published as such on its own contact page. Somebody in trouble who calls expecting counselling reaches a licensing office.

How do I stop a bookmaker from taking my deposits?

Ask for self-exclusion in writing and keep the reply. A deposit limit set to zero is not the same thing, and closing an account is easier to reverse. If the operator continues to accept deposits after a self-exclusion request, that is a complaint for the regulator.

What is the legal age to bet in Ghana?

Eighteen, everywhere in the country, with no exception anywhere in it. Letting anyone under eighteen use your account or your mobile money wallet to bet puts both of you on the wrong side of that.

Betting is entertainment that costs money on average. It is not income, it is not a plan and it is not a way out of a shortfall. If it has started to look like any of those, the tools above exist for exactly that moment.
